Hangars: Hazardous to Your Health?

While great attention is given to safety onboard the aircraft, the hangar can often be an overlooked danger zone ? one that is more accident prone than most, simply by virtue of the services it provides and the equipment/chemicals within it.

MedAire?s two-day Hangar Safety training teaches maintenance staff about the prevention and treatment of common hangar incidents, as well as the theory behind OSHA regulations. Below, we share a few helpful tips covered in the course:

Hangar Safety Tips

  • Immobile wall first aid kits don?t cut it ? When a true emergency occurs, a medical kit will need to be carried to the scene for easy access to bandages and other contents. Frequent trips to and from the wall-mounted unit will waste valuable time in cases of severe injury.
  • Know whether 9-1-1 is really 9-1-1 ? Some hangars require you to dial an access code for outside calls. Do you know if your hangar allows for simple 9-1-1 calls, or is it more like 8-9-1-1? Know your hangar?s policy.
  • Automated External Defibrillators (AED) aren?t just for aircraft ? While every airplane should have an AED, so should every hangar and lobby. Heart attacks can happen anywhere and to anyone ? including hangar employees, taxi operators, janitors or even contractors visiting your hangar bay or FBO lobby.
